Integrated MetOcean Data

High quality, fully validated MetOcean data enables better understanding and enhances analysis quality.

BMT ARGOSS hold an extensive database of fully validated MetOcean (Meteorological and Oceanographic) data. This is collocated with the recorded vessel data based on its position at each time step.

This integration significantly improves the ability to interpret the vessel data by identifying the environmental conditions during operation.

Included in the available MetOcean parameters are:

  • Prevailing wave height and direction.
  • Wind speed and direction.
  • Ocean current speed and direction.
  • Tidal current speed and direction.

How is MetOcean Data Used?

The unique incorporation of MetOcean data with recorded vessel data enables superior analysis of vessel performance. For propulsive performance monitoring it is hugely important to compare like for like. The BMT SMARTSERVICES system allows such filtering at the click of a button.

The inclusion of advanced MetOcean data, (e.g. humidity, salinity, temperature), can also help to account for changes in vessel efficiency. For example, a cruise vessel in a hot and humid environment would expect to use more energy on air conditioning than one in a temperate climate. Better understanding of increased demands in differing environments can help vessel operations to optimise budgets and voyage plans.

Where Does Our MetOcean Data Come From?

BMT ARGOSS uses wave models that continuously predict global wave conditions at three hour intervals on a resolution of 1¼˚x1˚. Higher resolution models are incorporated to cover the Mediterranean Sea, the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea, the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. It should be noted that, as well as the normal wave parameters (significant wave height, wave period and direction), directional wave spectra are also available.

BMT ARGOSS also holds an extensive database of global wave buoy measurements and satellite observations recorded from 1985 onwards. All of the wave models are optimised against this measured data.

The highly skilled meteorologists at BMT have also developed models of the astronomical tides in the world's oceans and seas. The tidal database is formed by the integration of approximately 5000 tidal stations and 15 years of satellite radar altimeter data. In addition to this, BMT ARGOSS also has a complete database of ocean currents obtained from various, globally accepted, ocean current models updated on a on a daily basis. The total flow velocity is obtained by adding the tidal flow to the ocean flow.
